The community sits on a collective territory of approximately 2,513 hectares and its name comes from the abundance of pixvae or pijiba in its surroundings.

To get to the Pijibasal community from Panama City there is a land and water tour. The land route is along the Pan-American highway of approximately 300 km to reach Yaviza where you board a canoe, a traditional local boat, and the water route begins navigating the Chucunaque and Tuira rivers until you reach El Real de Santa María. In the rainy season it is possible to continue the tour of the Pirre river until reaching the community; while in the dry season it continues along a dirt road from El Real, crossing streams and rivers, passing through the communities of Pirre 2 and Pirre 1, until reaching Pijibasal.

The entire Embera culture highlights the wild fauna and flora that surrounds the community and is evidenced in traditional dances such as the trapiche dance, the snake dance, the wacuco dance and the monkey dance, among others. The dances are interpreted by the women who sing in the Embera language while the men play traditional instruments accompanying the singing of the women; the chimbombón, jorca, aisle, cumbia, curibay, and Cumpiacurepa.

The traditional clothing of women is the ‟paruma”, a skirt with straight lines and fabric in intense colors with different patterns associated with the biodiversity that surrounds them. During the dances, the women wear their best parumas, beads, necklaces and silver bracelets with the back uncovered. As for men, the traditional is the use of the ‟guayuco” or ‟loincloth”. However, a Latin influence is the use of pants for men and blouses for women.

Body painting is part of the Embera clothing inherited from the ancestors and they use it for several reasons: one is to protect themselves from insect bites and other skin diseases and another as makeup for communal parties and important events.

La comunidad se asienta en un territorio colectivo de aproximadamente 2,513 hectáreas y su nombre proviene de la abundancia de pixvae o pijiba en sus alrededores.

Para llegar a la comunidad Pijibasal desde la ciudad de Panamá se hace un recorrido terrestre y acuático. La ruta terrestre es por la carretera Panamericana de aproximadamente 300 km para llegar a Yaviza donde se aborda una piragua, una embarcación tradicional local, y se inicia la ruta acuática navegando por los ríos Chucunaque y Tuira hasta llegar a El Real de Santa María. En temporada de lluvias es posible continuar el recorrido por el río Pirre hasta llegar a la comunidad; mientras que en la época seca se continúa por una carretera de terracería desde El Real, atravesando quebradas y ríos, pasando por las comunidades de Pirre 2 y Pirre 1, hasta llegar a Pijibasal.

Toda la cultura emberá resalta la fauna y la flora silvestre que rodea a la comunidad y se evidencia en las danzas tradicionales como la danza del trapiche, la danza de la culebra, la danza del wacuco y la danza de los monos entre otras. Las danzas son interpretadas por las mujeres quienes cantan en lengua emberá mientras que los hombres tocan instrumentos tradicionales acompañando el canto de las mujeres;el chimbombón, jorca, pasillo, cumbia curibay cumpiacurepa.

La vestimenta tradicional de las mujeres es la ‟paruma”, falda de líneas rectas y de tela de intensos colores con diferentes estampados asociados a la biodiversidad que los rodea. Durante las danzas las mujeres utilizan sus mejores parumas, chaquiras, collares y pulseras de plata con el dorso descubierto. En cuanto a los hombres, lo tradicional es el uso del ‟guayuco” o ‟taparrabo”. Sin embargo, una influencia latina es el uso de los pantalones en los hombres y blusas en las mujeres.

La pintura del cuerpo es parte de la indumentaria emberá heredada de los antepasados y la utilizan por varias razones: una es para protegerse de la picada de insectos y otras enfermedades de la piel y otra como maquillaje para las fiestas comunales y eventos importantes.
